WAS ISTBCCB

WAS ISTBCCB

BCCB will sie ergänzen.

Deshalb wollen wir sorgende Städte “from below” aufbauen.

Introduction

WHAT ISBCCB

BUILDING CARING CITIES FROM BELOW (BCCB) is a concept for the solidarity-based organisation of care among politically active people. The aim of BCCB is not to replace other forms of organising and activity, but to ground them in autonomous and solidary ways of relating – and thus to counter political burnout, powerlessness and fear in the face of the many current crises, as well as the reproduction of violent conditions in activist circles. On this website you will find materials designed to support you in organising yourself care-politically with your comrades. At the heart of the BCCB concept are the Care Protocols, which you can find in the “Care Ecosystem” tab and which contain procedures for establishing care-political structures.

We make no claim to ownership of the knowledge gathered here and no claim to completeness or perfection of the protocols: appropriate them – as something that helps you in your struggles and in mutual care among comrades.

For us, only one thing is non-negotiable: The emancipatory and anti-authoritarian claim that opposes any form of discrimination just as it opposes state repression, exploitation in wage labour and all conditions in which people are abandoned beings.

At the same time, BCCB follows a larger idea, a concrete utopia: the utopia of a caring city, oriented towards the needs of those who live, work and struggle in it. However, in establishing caring cities, state structures cannot be relied upon: as the current drastic cuts in (sometimes vital) funding for non-profit associations, institutions and causes show, state support can be withdrawn after every election, after every political shift. The aim is therefore to build caring cities “from below”.

The possible application of BCCB begins in individual political contexts, making them more capable of action outwardly and safer inwardly for all involved – and especially for those affected by sexism, racism and other forms of oppression. This is achievable here and now, and the materials collected on this site are intended to facilitate that. At the same time, the application extends to the concrete utopia of transregional and transnational networking of care-political organising.

BCCB as a Foundation

Different forms of organisation – from individual mobilisations to transregional networks – rest on the same foundation: solidary care organising across all political contexts.

Introduction

WHAT ISBCCB

BUILDING CARING CITIES FROM BELOW (BCCB) is a concept. It is about politically active people organising care in solidarity. BCCB does not want to replace other forms of organisation. It wants to add to them. It is about autonomous and solidary relationships. This helps against burnout. This helps against powerlessness. This helps against fear. On this website you will find materials. They help you organise care-politically with your comrades. The most important thing in BCCB are the Care Protocols. You can find them in the “Care Ecosystem” section. They show you how to build care-political structures.

We do not claim ownership of the knowledge. We do not claim completeness. We do not claim perfection. Use the materials for your struggles. Use them for mutual care.

One thing is non-negotiable for us: The emancipatory claim. The claim against domination. It opposes discrimination. It opposes state repression. It opposes exploitation in wage labour. It opposes all conditions where people are left alone.

BCCB follows a big idea. A concrete utopia: the utopia of a caring city. A caring city is oriented towards people’s needs. Towards the needs of those who live, work and struggle there. We cannot rely on state structures. The state keeps cutting funding. For associations. For institutions. For important purposes. After every election, politics can change. That is why we want to build caring cities “from below”.

BCCB can be used in individual political contexts. It makes them more capable of action outwardly. It makes them safer inwardly. Especially for people affected by sexism, racism or other forms of oppression. This is achievable here and now. The materials on this site are meant to make that easier. But BCCB reaches further. To the concrete utopia. Of transregional and international care-political organising.

      FAQ

Was ist BUILDING CARING CITIES FROM BELOW?

      Warum "from below"?

      Was heißt Care?

Care-Organisierung IST politische Arbeit.

      FAQ

Answers to questions we are frequently asked.

What is BUILDING CARING CITIES FROM BELOW?

CARING CITIES FROM BELOW is a campaign by care-politically organised people from different contexts who want to communicate the relevance of politicising care relationships and collect and share know-how on possibilities for care-political organising.

How exclusive are you? Who can participate?

We are not exclusive. Anyone interested in solidary care organising who shares our emancipatory principles can participate. It is not about specific qualifications or backgrounds, but about the willingness to learn together and be there for each other.

What can I do if I work 40 hours and have no time for care?

That is precisely why care organising is needed! No one can manage everything alone. In a Care Plenum, it is about finding solutions together – perhaps others can take on tasks you don't have time for, while you contribute where it fits for you. It is not about perfection, but about mutual support within the scope of each person's possibilities.

I would be interested in a Care Plenum, but don't know with whom?

Write to us! We can connect you with other interested people or help you take the first steps. Sometimes a Care Plenum starts with 2–3 people who know each other and then grows organically. The materials on this site can also serve as an entry point to start conversations with people in your environment.

Isn't all of this too exhausting?

Paradoxically, care organising can give energy in the long run rather than cost it. Yes, it takes time and attention. But the burnout, loneliness and constant overwhelm that arise when everyone fights alone are much more exhausting in the long run. Care organising is an investment in more sustainable structures.

      Why "from below"?

Because we cannot and do not want to wait for state structures. "From below" means that we ourselves build the structures we need – independent of funding pots, election results and political conjunctures. It is a commitment to self-organisation and radical democracy from below.

      What does care mean?

Care encompasses all activities that enable and sustain life: emotional support, housework, childcare, caregiving, but also political reproductive work. Care is what capitalism devalues and privatises – and what we want to organise collectively and solidarily.

Why don't you do real political work?

Care organising IS political work. The reproduction of our struggles and our lives is the foundation for any other political practice. Without viable care structures, activists burn out, struggles fizzle out, movements fall apart. BCCB grounds political work, it does not replace it.

      Are you a housing project?

No, BCCB is not a housing project. Care organising can, but does not have to be, connected with shared living. Many Care Plena organise people who live spread across a city or region. Shared living can be part of care organising, but is not a prerequisite.

      How do you collectivise finances?

This varies greatly. Some plena have joint accounts and budgets, others organise financial redistribution more flexibly. Important: financial collectivisation is not a dogma, but a tool for material solidarity. Details can be found in the Financial Collectivisation protocol.

      FAQ

Answers to questions we are frequently asked.

What is BUILDING CARING CITIES FROM BELOW?

CARING CITIES FROM BELOW is a campaign by care-politically organised people from different contexts. They want to show how important it is to politicise care relationships. They collect and share knowledge about possibilities for care-political organising.

How exclusive are you? Who can participate?

We are not exclusive. Anyone interested in solidary care organising who shares our emancipatory principles can participate. It is not about specific qualifications or backgrounds. It is about the willingness to learn together and be there for each other.

What can I do if I work 40 hours and have no time for care?

That is precisely why care organising is needed! No one can manage everything alone. In a Care Plenum, it is about finding solutions together. Perhaps others can take on tasks you don't have time for. You can contribute where it fits for you. It is not about perfection. It is about mutual support within the scope of each person's possibilities.

I would be interested in a Care Plenum, but don't know with whom?

Write to us! We can connect you with other interested people. Or help you take the first steps. Sometimes a Care Plenum starts with 2–3 people who know each other. And then grows naturally. The materials on this site can also serve as an entry point. To start conversations with people in your environment.
